True North: Peary, Cook and the race to the Pole
More like a snow opera - this is the real-life saga of jealousy and professional hatred between Peary, the supposed discoverer of the North Pole in 1909 and his former colleague, Cook who said he discovered it in 1908. -
The North Pole was Here: Puzzles and Perils at the top of the World
fter moving 400 yards an hour on an ice floe at the top of the world for three days, Science Writer Andrew Revkin looks down from a helicopter. He watches the icy expanses recede far below while he weighs questions and answers about global warming, and the challenge of presenting these to young readers who are often lured in other directions by iPods & computer games. Tomorrow's scientists need to be 'shook up' and know there are still discoveries to be made; they can be the ones inventing new techniques needed to retrieve & examine rock core samples from deep below the ice. (See pictures on page 66). They can be detectives competing with the changing ice for answers to frustrating puzzles about the rising seas, for example. -

North Pole Legacy: Black, white and Eskimo
ound this in my local library, and it was a great read. For a neuroscientist to be the writer, he is also a good writer. One passage describes as Peary's wife, coming to the artic from New York City on a relief ship, must have seen an Inuit woman with a Inuit child of white skin complexion, and "must have understood. A stoic woman", as the book describes, decided in not saying anything. Very very detailed, it filled the dots in many areas. Would have liked a critical analysis of the 1912 Henson book "A Polar Explorer" in light of the culture during the time it was written, and how it would have been re-written today, since the book publication could only be possible after Peary's review. And would have also mentioned more about the meteorites found and hauled in the 1890's. But still, the amount of detail and effort in stringing it all together is majestic. -

White Paradise: Journeys to the North Pole
Everyone who's interested into de North Pole should buy this book! Everything is pointed in this book but the pictures: Who loves NP and also Photography, would love this book. There's so much information in there about the history and evolution of that part of the world and also the people who had lived there from recorded time. I bought it for a friend who is a North Pole fan and I bet that he would love it: Because one picture say 1000 words, this book has millions of words because the pictures are beautiful, complete and very interesting.
